Colleen Sommers’ current work includes intricately drawn and carefully painted watercolor and acrylic paintings. Fun, lustrously painted wooden bowls, boxes and furniture, sweet little pastels, and big chunky concrete objects, mostly garden tables!
Her primary focus, in the studio, is on color, form and detail. She concentrates on creating images that look great up close, as well as from across the room. Colleen says, “I love the way colors change depending on what other colors are put around them.” Her attention to detail comes from her unending passion for all things small. She recalls, even in childhood, being fascinated with the minutia of life and the want to organize it. In particular, boxes, marbles, pebbles, blades of grass and flower petals. This is more obvious in her watercolor and acrylic paintings, which tend to have more repetitive images within each individual painting.
Though currently working in watercolor, acrylic, pastel and concrete, Colleen’s art background also includes photography, silkscreen printing, stage set design and furniture building. Primarily self-taught, she has taken classes in drawing, photography and furniture building.
Colleen is a founding member of the Austin Women’s Art Project. Her work has been shown nationwide in distinguished galleries, museum shops and art fairs.
Colleen lives in Austin, Texas with her family. She enjoys being outside gardening, hiking and biking and playing with her son and his friends.
